What’s next for Mayfield?
Nothing good, probably.![]()
Jeremy Mayfield is done. Probably for good.
After missing the last two races after a federal judge overruled NASCAR’s suspension against him for allegedly using methamphetamine, a July 6 test showed that Mayfield had meth in his system, the Associated Press reported Wednesday. NASCAR filed the test into the Mayfield court case along with a statement from Mayfield’s stepmother saying that she had seen Mayfield use meth some 30 times over a seven-year period, according to the same article.
Mayfield responded Wednesday by refuting his stepmother’s claims while his lawyer said the results of their own independent drug test were negative. You could read the full AP story by Jenna Fryer by clicking here.
But if NASCAR’s test is accurate and Mayfield’s stepmother is telling the truth, then Mayfield has been lying since May. And he’s been attacking NASCAR with those lies.
Note to Mayfield: Never attack NASCAR, especially when you have false claims as your only legs to stand on.
The failed drug test earlier this month makes Mayfield’s story that a combination of allergy medicine and Adderall created a false positive in his May test even shakier than it already was. Really, Mayfield is running out of recourse.
The AP also reported that Mayfield has parted ways with his own race team, Mayfield Motorsports, and that the team has folded.
The only real question left to answer is what Mayfield will do next. His name is worthless, he can’t race in NASCAR and there aren’t a wealth of owners in other series looking to put an alleged meth user in their cars either.
For now, he will continue to fight his case in U.S. District Court, arguing that the drug tests he’s taken for NASCAR were wrong. It could still be possible, but good luck with that argument.
It’s just a shame this story had to play out this way for a driver who, at least for a couple of years, was knocking on the door of stardom.
That door has closed on Mayfield, and it will never reopen.

I believe Mayfield should do the test at an independent lab where nascar and mayfield can have knowledgable technicians do this lab test together. each one testing a sample Mayfield gives while at the lab and handed directly to the lab technicians and no other person touching the sample. gets rid of a questionable chain of command and could resolve this whole affair.
